I am museum professional by day, and a wife and mother of four every minute of every day. We love to spend time together in our home and in our small Virginia town, but we also love to have adventures, often at museums and historic sites. Somewhere in all of that, I manage to find a little time to write, mostly historical fiction, and I hope that one day, I will be seeing my own books at the library!

Not a Poet…and I Know It

On March 14, 2022March 13, 2022 By Andrea Green BurtonIn Art & Creativity, Challenges, Writing, Writing Advice3 Comments

When I took the single creative writing course my high school offered, it was a one-semester elective with a poetry unit and a fiction unit. I was a senior, and I knew the teacher from when he’d started a creative writing group at the junior high four years earlier, when I was in eighth grade. …

I’m Back!

On January 14, 2022 By Andrea Green BurtonIn Books, Challenges, Writing2 Comments

First, of course, I’m back on the blog after a pretty long hiatus, so let me give you a quick update! After signing with my literary agent at the tail end of July, I dove into some final revisions of my manuscript before she began submitting it to editors, and then she and I spent …

Saturday Six #31: Lessons In Querying

On August 14, 2021 By Andrea Green BurtonIn Saturday Six, Writing, Writing AdviceLeave a comment

If you haven’t heard the news...I have an agent! I was incredibly excited to sign on with Marlene Stringer of the Stringer Literary Agency at the end of July. Since the day I spoke with her on the phone, it’s been a bit of a whirlwind, asking questions, signing the agreement, a bit of waiting …

Broken and Beautiful

My grandma lived in Florida for almost three decades, where she became a very discerning shell collector. When we visited the beach with her on our vacations, it was always on the Gulf Coast, at any number of locations along the short stretch between Clearwater and Fort Myers, including the seashell haven of Sanibel Island. …

Saturday Six #30: Extreme Weather

On July 17, 2021 By Andrea Green BurtonIn Family, Saturday Six, Travel1 Comment

I have always been obsessed with weather. I can remember a tornado warning one day after school. I was probably in 1st or 2nd grade, and the sky was greenish-gray while my friend’s mom picked her up from our house. And I remember another tornado warning when my mom ushered my brother and me to …

Practice Makes Better

On July 8, 2021July 8, 2021 By Andrea Green BurtonIn Challenges, Writing, Writing AdviceLeave a comment

Are you tired of writing & childbirth comparisons yet? I made one a few months back, though it might not have been quite the metaphor you expected. Today I have a new one! In lieu of attending the Historical Novel Society’s annual conference last month (my oldest’s softball tournament got in the way!), I gifted …

Hold, Please

On July 2, 2021 By Andrea Green BurtonIn Children, Family, Writing2 Comments

I've learned by now that agents have very particular likes and dislikes. After all, they’re just readers, and everyone has their own preferences. I recently read an agent wish list that specified she wanted no stories where a woman gave up her career for love or family.  I also read a novel a few weeks …

Saturday Six #29: The Surprises of Parenting

On June 26, 2021June 25, 2021 By Andrea Green BurtonIn Challenges, Children, Family, Saturday Six1 Comment

I wanted to be a parent for as long as I can remember, and I fully recognize that I am one of the fortunate ones who was able to realize this dream. Being a parent is one of the most tiring, thankless, neverending jobs. Actually, I like to think of it more as a “practice” …

Saturday Six #28: When I Kept Going

On June 12, 2021June 11, 2021 By Andrea Green BurtonIn Challenges, Saturday Six, WritingLeave a comment

When I was ten years old, my parents gave me the thrill of my life: they finally agreed to adopt a cat. We chose a cat at the shelter and named him Punkin (Punky for short), a name I pulled straight out of a what-to-name-your-pet book filled with photos of fluffy felines. Punky was arguably …

All In

On June 9, 2021June 9, 2021 By Andrea Green BurtonIn Friends, Writing1 Comment

New Year’s Eve, 2006. Four months earlier, I had moved to a different state to attend graduate school, leaving behind my family, my church, and a particularly good friend in whom I was romantically interested. It wasn’t a huge secret that I wanted this friend to be more than a friend, but I’d never outright …
